Planet Symbol/ How planet was named

Here is Neptune's symbol, the Triton. This symbol represents Neptune, the god of the sea. The triton has three points. The symbol is his weapon, or staff. You usaually see it in pictures. It is a symbol of power in the sea.
Planets were named after gods. For example Venus was named after the god Venus. Pluto was named after the god Pluto. Neptune was named after Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. Since a lot of planets were named after Greek and Roman gods a lot of people accepted the name Neptune. First though Neptune was named the planet exterior to Uranus, or as Le Verrier’s planet. Then more scientists agreed to the name Neptune because a lot of other planets were named after Greek or Roman gods.
Here below we have a picture slide show of all the gods the planets were named after. We don't include Earth because Earth is the only planet which was not named after a god or goddess
